Santa Barbara holds a special place in my heart, not only did Chris and I elope in Santa Barbara back in 2020, but it was also a destination I frequented back when I used to live in Southern California.
I would eagerly embark on those long weekend drives. The drive became part of the fun, with every mile adding to the excitement as I got closer to the amazing views and the lively vibe in the air.
I’ve poured my heart into creating this travel guide, hoping to share the same sense of wonder and joy I’ve felt during my trips to Santa Barbara. With these thoughtfully curated recommendations, I hope you’ll experience the timeless charm of this coastal gem and feel inspired to plan your own unforgettable adventure.
California Coastal Climate
Welcome to Santa Barbara, a coastal paradise where breathtaking natural beauty, rich Spanish colonial heritage, and a vibrant cultural scene come together. Let this travel guide be your key to uncovering the magic of this California coastal destination. Whether you’re dreaming of sun-soaked beaches, exploring world-class wineries, or experiencing the laid-back California lifestyle, Santa Barbara truly has it all.
Nestled along California’s central coast, Santa Barbara enjoys a Mediterranean climate, offering mild summers, comfortable winters, and a relaxed atmosphere that has made it a beloved destination for travelers. With sunlit days, refreshing ocean breezes, and palm-lined streets, the city provides the perfect setting for everything from savoring local cuisine to basking on sandy shores. It’s a place where unforgettable experiences and cherished memories await around every corner.
Santa Barbara’s charm is irresistible year-round, making it an ideal getaway no matter the season. While there’s truly no “bad time” to visit, I personally recommend planning a trip between late spring to late summer.
For me, Santa Barbara is filled with special moments: Chris and I celebrated our outdoor wedding here in late February, marked birthdays in March and June, joined the vibrant festivities of Old Spanish Days in August, and attended joyful weddings in late September. The city’s year-round calendar of festivals is a testament to its incredible weather, which never fails to keep the lively spirit of this coastal town alive.

Exploring Santa Barbara

STATE STREET
Santa Barbara has a vibrant downtown, where the history, architecture and modernity intertwine. On Santa Barbara's State Street you'll enjoy the Spanish architecture as you peek into the windows of many boutique shops and restaurants. A few of my favorite shops are the Prop and Decor Outlet, Raoul Textile and SALT. Immerse yourself in wellness at the SALT Cave, explore your inner child at The MOXI Museum, indulge in the city's diverse culinary scene, or even grab tickets to a show at one of the two historical theaters in downtown, Granada or Lobero. Don't forget to take the Red Tile Self-Guided Walking Tour to admire the unique architecture. Santa Barbara's downtown is a captivating blend offering something special for every traveler to enjoy.
SALT is not just a distinctive boutique offering a range of Himalayan Salt products like lamps, candles, bath bombs, and salts. Schedule a Salt Cave Experience! Whether you choose a massage, yoga, sound bathing, meditation, or simply unwinding in one of their lounge chairs — during my last visit, a friend and I relaxed on the salt "sand". The Salt cave is one of my favorite destinations every time.

Although this museum is primarily aimed at children, my husband and I, as museum enthusiasts, appreciate how it invites everyone to embrace their inner child. It features attractions like a giant Lite-Brite and a wooden derby car race. Visit the top of the museum for a brief respite from the lively indoor activities, where you can enjoy stunning views of Santa Barbara and explore some interactive water features.
SEE A SHOW AT ONE OF THE TWO HISTORIC THEATERS:
In the heart of downtown, located off of State Street is Santa Barbara's Granada Theater, A Performing Arts Center that offers plenty of entertainment from Opera to comedy. Off the beaten path, On E Canon Perdido Street you'll find Lobero Theater, California's oldest continuously operating theater which hosts a variety of musical performances, which in the past have included one of my favorites, Ottmar Liebert.

THE WATERFRONT
Santa Barbara's waterfront, where the beauty of the sea meets coastal allure. Explore the palm-lined Cabrillo Boulevard, which stretches along the beach, offering breathtaking views and refreshing ocean breezes.
Take a walk down Stearns Wharf, because when there's a pier, you walk down it...
If not for the unobstructed view, for the possibility of an oceanfront bite, or drinks on an outdoor patio.
Head down to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center for an interactive educational experience, make sure to visit their "Wet Deck" where you can try out tools used for ocean study and learn about life beneath the surface.

FUNK ZONE
Explore local artists in the studios and art galleries while bar hopping or wine tasting in this unique area of Santa Barbara.
The Funk Zone is Santa Barbara's creative neighborhood, full of innovation and artistry. This once-industrial area has become a lively center of galleries, boutiques, craft breweries, and wine tasting rooms, attracting art lovers and food enthusiasts alike.
Wander through vibrant streets filled with murals and street art that capture the area's energetic vibe. Dive into the diverse art scene, with modern galleries displaying works by talented local artists.
Wine lovers will enjoy the many tasting rooms, offering a chance to sample the region's best wines and experience Santa Barbara's famous wine culture.
As you take in the Funk Zone's relaxed atmosphere, be sure to try the culinary delights from trendy restaurants and food trucks throughout the area. From fusion dishes to artisanal snacks, there are plenty of delicious options to satisfy your cravings.
Whether you're looking for artistic inspiration, a culinary journey, or just a place to relax and enjoy the creative ambiance, the Funk Zone offers an unforgettable and distinctly Santa Barbara experience.
SANTA BARBARA MISSION
A timeless emblem of history and spirituality located in the heart of California. This grand Spanish Colonial Revival-style mission, also known as the "Queen of the Missions," radiates tranquility and cultural importance.
Upon entering its grounds, you'll encounter breathtaking architecture, including the iconic twin bell towers and lush gardens. Discover the rich heritage and religious artifacts showcased in the museum, offering insight into the region's past.
Admire the intricately decorated chapel, featuring beautiful frescoes and religious artwork. Visiting the Santa Barbara Mission is not only a historical experience but also a spiritual journey, providing a serene escape from the bustling world outside.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture admirer, or a seeker of inner peace, the Santa Barbara Mission is a must-visit destination that promises to leave a lasting impression on your heart and mind.

SANTA BARBARA COURTHOUSE
An awe-inspiring architectural marvel that holds a deep significance in my heart. My husband, Christopher, and I had a private elopement here in 2020, just a month before the world changed in unimaginable ways.
We exchanged vows amidst the breathtaking Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and scenic gardens. The courthouse's beauty only enhanced the romance of that special memory.
Each visit to this iconic landmark brings back those cherished memories, filling us with a strong connection to this place. Whether exploring its graceful interiors, climbing the clock tower for panoramic views, or strolling hand in hand through the charming gardens, we're reminded of the love and joy from that unforgettable day.
The Santa Barbara Courthouse is more than just a beautiful building; it's a symbol of our love story. It embodies our commitment to each other and reminds us that love can endure even the toughest times. It's a place we hold dear, forever a treasured part of our journey together.
I highly recommend a visit, and if you're there in the summer, check out their Free Summer Cinema Series. Screenings are every Friday night in July & August at 8:30pm in the Courthouse's sunken gardens. Be sure to arrive early (but after 12pm) to secure your spot, and you can check the lineup by visiting DowntownSB.

Another tried and true for my husband and I, we love zoos and aquariums, they provide so much insight to the rehabilitation of animals that we would not have a chance to see up close otherwise. Zoos and aquariums are an incredible opportunity to teach others about wildlife and how we can best protect it.
Not to mention it's one of those activities where you get your steps in and barely notice!
One of my favorite experiences is the giraffe feeding, where you have the opportunity to come face to face with these gentle giants. The joy in their eyes as they reach for the leaves from your hand is a memory you'll never forget.

Although I haven't had the opportunity to visit yet, it's always at the top of my list for future sights to see. You need to book in advance, which can complicate spontaneous day trips, but the photos suggest it's definitely worth it!
Lotusland's gardens reflect the vision of Madame Ganna Walska, the estate's former owner, who meticulously designed the landscape with unique plants and imaginative sculptures.
Discover the lively collections of succulents, lotuses, and exotic plants from around the world.
Lotusland is more than just a garden; it's an artistic creation that encourages visitors to explore its enchanting landscapes and draw inspiration from nature's variety.

Where to Eat & Drink
La Paloma Cafe
One street over from State, on Ortega, is this gem of a restaurant! A girlfriend and I had brunch on their patio right as the world was opening back up, and the food and cocktails did not disappoint.
Try the Sourdough Banana Pancakes!
Santo Mezcal
The only stop I'll ever need for lunch in Santa Barbara!
This is my husband and I's favorite Mexican Food restaurant. They have it all, an aesthetic space, outdoor patio dining right off of State Street, and the most delicious food and of course MARGARITAS!
Our Recommendations? Start with the Ceviche de Pulpo (Octopus), My husband gets any variation of the tacos, but tends to go Pulpo for these as well, I have a hard time straying from the Camarones al Mezcal (Can you tell we like seafood?) We like to pair these selections with the La Fresa Margarita for a classic strawberry, or mix things up with a Margarita Mora from their premium list for a Blood Orange, Sage, Thyme, and Mint mix with a Black Sea-salt rim!
Zaytoon
My #1 favorite Santa Barbara restaurant! Located on the same street as the historic Lobero Theater, is a restaurant so hidden you wouldn't even know was there... if you didn't know about it prior.
If you find it tucked away on this side street, you'll be led to a completely outdoor patio surrounded by lush greenery. Their patio is like stepping into a secret garden filled with outdoor fire pit tables, Lebanese/Middle-Eastern inspired cuisine, specialty cocktails, and a pretty decent wine list.
Do not sleep on this choice, and be sure to make a reservation beforehand, and bring tips for the evening belly dancer!
Loquita
Spanish Tapas and Cocktails in an outdoor patio setting, also located right on state street.
The Patatas Bravas makes an excellent snack before making your way through the local bars in the Funk Zone.
Lilac Patisserie
Santa Barbara's ENTIRELY GLUTEN FREE cafe and bakery.
The best part? You literally can't tell (taste wise)
Long gone are the days when eating gluten free meant giving up tasty favorites.
Caje
Boasting high ratings, and having multiple locations throughout Santa Barbara, this is one coffee stop I have yet to make, but not for lack of allure. This is not your typical grab-and-go. Stay a while, enjoy the ambiance, and take a pic for the gram of these coffees that look like cocktails. Personally, I'll be ordering the Strawberry Matcha (it has rose petals!) Another fun fact, their Outdoor Arlington location is also known as "Villa & Vine", a Premier all-in-one venue for weddings and events.
Glass House
I couldn't resist adding this long gone gem... The Glass House was my former favorite speakeasy. After Chris and I eloped, we bar hopped with friends and this was our last and best stop of the night, sitting amongst their eclectic vintage living room sections sipping on interesting cocktails. While you unfortunately won't get to experience Glass House, you can still visit Milk & Honey Tapas whose owners were responsible for Glass House.
The Cruisery
This is a fun little spot to get your drink on! Right off State Street, they have great food to snack on, and excellent drink options like their "Pineapple Express", or the "Fig & Haley". This location is dog friendly and leaves bowls of water out for the dog passerby.

Djinn
Located within the lobby of The Hotel Californian is an upscale modern cocktail bar with a Moroccan twist. And another Dev(o)n is responsible for the keen mixology. Try the "A Djinn by any other name"!

The Pearl Social
This adorable bar is located between The Lark, and the Santa Barbara Wine Collective. It can be missed if you don't know where to look. It screams modern vintage, and is definitely a place to gather among friends. I don't remember the first time I tried a Paper Plane, but I usually modify it with scotch, and this place hit the nail right on the head.
McConnell's Fine Ice Cream
It's ice cream — I'm going to let you figure out the rest, but this is a spot you don't come to Santa Barbara without getting. My personal favorites are the Earl Grey and Shortbread Cookies or Honey & Cornbread Cookies.
Tasting Rooms
Grassini Family Vineyards
Steps away from State Street in the presidio Neighborhood, this award-winning tasting room provides $25 tastings of their estate-grown wines. Stay a while in what feels like your own living room, and order an additional glass, or maybe even a bottle.

Jaime Sloan
Whether you decide to sit inside of their cozy tasting room, or outside on the patio, this tasting room has a little bit of everything. White? Red? A Variety. You can even do a chocolate pairing. I absolutely love this tasting room. It was actually one of my first that I visited (In Santa Barbara) and I continue to love it every time I return.
Silver Wines
One of the things I love most about Santa Barbara is how places strive to create a homely atmosphere. This tasting room was another spot that felt like sitting in your own living room. In such cozy settings, strangers turn into friends, which is exactly how I befriended my favorite "Opinionated Gay" Podcaster, Arain of (@enablingarain). After Arain finished work, he "wined-down" with us, allowing us to engage in genuine conversations about life over wine, rather than just talking about it.
Kunin
Located within the Funk Zone and on Santa Barbara's Urban Wine Trail, Kunin is an easy first stop if starting your tastings closer to the beachside. This tasting room was my very first tasting room ever, when I started establishing my taste for wine, when I was freshly 21. My favorite here continues to be their Viognier.
Frequency
A recommendation from a Santa Barbara local, and friend. While I haven't had the pleasure yet, I'd love to schedule a trip back to Santa Barbara and sip on their Grenache Rose in the summer sun on their outdoor patio.
Au Bon Climat
When you enter this tasting room, you might notice that it resembles a library—and you'd be correct! It's a wine library, showcasing their numerous vintages. It's another recommendation I haven't had the opportunity to experience yet. (Santa Barbara is so expansive! There's always something new to explore)

Santa Barbara Wine Collective
This Collective serves as a tasting room and bottle shop, offering a curated selection of wines from various vineyards within the Santa Barbara designated area. Open daily for tastings, it also serves as a fantastic venue for intimate weddings and events. My initial visit was for precisely that reason—my friend held her wedding reception here following a beautiful beach ceremony!
Unique Experiences
Rent Bikes or Buggies
There is no shortage of rentable fun in Santa Barbara, and what better way to see such a beautiful place than in the fresh air while riding a tandem bike with friends or with your hair in the wind in one of Santa Barbara's Buggies?
Private Winery Tours
Get picked up and driven around by a professional tour guide to multiple wineries. No worries about which friend is the DD, and with a specially curated lunch included, this is a sure pick for birthdays and bachelorette parties!
Charter a Sail around the Harbor
While this excursion would be on the pricier end, you get what you pay for in views and privacy. Enjoy a packed wine picnic while you're sailing around the harbor. This can be both a romantic date idea, as well as a fun twist on a wedding venue!
Horseback riding on the beach
Riding gentle, well-trained horses along the sun-kissed shores, You'll feel an unparalleled connection with nature. Take a horseback ride along the coastal shores of Santa Barbara with Los Padres Outfitters, Santa Barbara's Premium Horseback Riding Adventures.
Catered Beach Picnics
An absolute date night dream! Have your own luxury picnic set up in some amazing locations along Santa Barbara's coast with Santa Barbara Picnic Co., and have it catered by one of their preferred vendors, or one of my personal favorites, Slate Catering!
Festivals & Events
Old Spanish Days (August)
Old Spanish Days, a celebration deeply embedded in Santa Barbara's heritage, holds a special place in my heart. My first experience with this lively festival happened by chance, but it was a serendipitous moment I won't forget. It was the first time I had brought my mom to Santa Barbara; we had driven 2.5 hours mainly for Zaytoon. As we wandered the vibrant streets, I saw festival-goers having confetti eggs playfully smashed over their heads, and I couldn't help but wish for the same experience. Less than five minutes after expressing that wish to my mom, while crossing the street, a stranger appeared out of nowhere and surprised me with a confetti egg playfully smashed on my head, leaving confetti sprinkled in my hair. It felt as if the spirit of Old Spanish Days had heard my wish and granted it with an unexpected and delightful gesture. From that moment, I realized that Old Spanish Days was not just a celebration of tradition but a magical time when dreams can come true.
Summer Solstice Festival (June)
Santa Barbara’s Midsummer Festival is a vibrant celebration of arts, culture, and community that captures the essence of this picturesque coastal city. Held annually during the height of summer, the festival features a lively mix of music performances, dance showcases, local artisan markets, and food vendors offering delicious bites from Santa Barbara’s renowned culinary scene. With activities for all ages, including family-friendly workshops and immersive cultural experiences, the event highlights the region’s rich heritage and creative spirit. Set against the stunning backdrop of Santa Barbara’s beaches and mountains, the Summer Solstice Festival is a perfect way to enjoy the city’s sunshine, connect with the community, and revel in its artistic charm.
